BOARD MEETING:
Welcome to all our new Brushmonkeys!! Now that you have completed the 4 weekends of Training, it is time to get to work. One of the responsibilities of everyone member is what makes this Unit go. The Board is the one that sets the policy and rules for members to follow. If you wish to make more of your career in ESAR, attend the Board meetings. You will find that actual search and rescue missions make up only about 10% of the action in ESAR. Do not get left behind and wait for the missions, get involved with the operation of this organization. It takes a lot of people to make it go, so now is your chance to become a real part of it. Attend the Board meetings, you might find some other activity in ESAR would enjoy doing. Starts at 1900 hours at the Peace Community Center.
JUNIOR DAFFODIL PARADE.
This is a fun time for everyone. You start at 0800 hours in the morning and you are done by 1200. Wear something that indicates you are member of ESAR. You will be given jobs to help coordinate the Parade. Polly Towle, 253-851-4572 Home or 253-279-8960 Cell. As you can tell it does not take a lot of time. Meet at 0800 at the Mason Methodist Church, 27th & No Madison, which is 1 block west of Proctor Street. Everyone in ESAR is welcome to work this Parade. You do not have to be a Brushmonkey to work. This is good Public Relations for ESAR. So see you there?
SAFECO FIELD:
11th, Sheri Florek, ESAR Booth Manager, 253-617-8513 (Rendezvous 1445) 15th, Andy Florek, ESAR Booth Manager, 253-617-8068 (Rendezvous 1115) 25th, Sheri Florek, ESAR Booth Manager, 253-627-8513 (Rendezvous 1445)
As you can see, the Florek’s really like working for ESAR at Safeco Field. We hope you do also. We still need people to work, so please send in your paperwork if you have not done so. If you have questions on what to wear, what time to meet and the location to rendezvous, you can give them a call. We normally meet at 54th& Pacific Highway East, next to the Baskin & Robbins ice cream store. It is across the street from the Poodle Dog. No we do not meet at the Poodle Dog restaurant; we meet on the other side of Pacific Highway East. They let us park and ride from that location. They will be calling you for the size of shirt and to ask if you are going to work for that game. The list of workers has to be into Safeco 5 days before the game. If late, we are penalized $10 for each day we are late. You can wear ESAR hats or Mariners hats. Your choice. Black shoes and black pants are required of all workers. No shorts allowed. Remember, this is the only activity ESAR does to raise money, so we hope you will help us out. Bring your ID and Food Handlers card if you 16 to 20 years of age and Food Handlers Card and MAST card if you are over 21.
ESAR BANQUET
All of you by now should have received the flyer in the mail about the Banquet on the 6th of April at the Peace Community Church, 21st & Cushman Street. If you did not get information this is for those of you who did not get the notice. The Banquet will start at 1700 hours; you are to bring your favorite main dish or a dessert. Now remember, you are feeding some young people with bottomless pits, they call stomachs. You know what it takes to fill it, so bring enough for you and a couple of other people, they are called “teenagers”. It is a time for the new Brushmonkeys to receive their Brushmoney Certificates. It will be a time to purchase those items that will identify you as a member of ESAR. Drinks will be provided by ESAR. Do not stay at home if you are not going to receive a Brushmonkey Certificate. This is a Banquet for all members of ESAR. Others will also be honored for past and present activity in ESAR. It is a time for the old members and the new members to meet each other before that search we always seem to start in the middle of the night. Come and meet your new team partners.
DAFFODIL PARADE
It is time to have some fun. Come out and join ESAR for the Daffodil Parade on April 12th. It starts in Tacoma at 1000 hours, but we still will meet at 0800 near the Fireman’s Park at 7th & Pacific Ave. It is best if you park somewhere near the end of the Tacoma Parade, which ends near the Union Station. You can get dropped off and ride in the van to the other parades. We will go from Tacoma to Puyallup, Sumner, and then finish in Orting.
Bring your 48 hour pack but take everything out and fill it with something light (crumpled newspapers, pillow, popcorn, etc.) Dress for any weather (bring your rain gear). Wear anything you have that has ESAR on it and bring your ESAR hats. We may issue our orange vests so we all look alike. You need to look good because you will be on TV. Bring your water, gear, good attitude and be ready to have fun.
If you have little one’s bring them along. They can ride in the van and help the driver.
Let me know if you are coming so I know what to expect and if you are bring anyone else (kiddies).

MISSIONS:
On March 27th, we responded to our first search for 2008. A 75 year old male had left the McGee Rest Home about 0800 that morning and had not been seen since. Over 20 some members responded to the call at about 1515 hours. Everyone was to report to the Base, rather than at a Rendezvous location. The Base was located at 224th St. and 82nd Ave. Teams were formed and sent out that night to search for him. It was cold night and the subject was not dressed warm enough to spend the night out. He was wearing only one shoe, which was found not to far from Base. Now we knew he was only wearomg socks and no shoes. Our Teams were asked to knock on doors and request permission to search their yards. This is normal, particularly at night time. The area searched was brushy to open fields. It was very dark night and to be able to see the subject, you had to almost step on him to find him. He was located in the back yard of a residence. He was lying in brush that you could not see him from the trail in the yard. Again, we need to be sure we have hand flashlights along with our headlamps when searching at night. We do not want to miss people if there is a possibility that we could see them. He was located the next morning in the yard. The dogs did not detect him, nor was he in a position to be seen by anyone, unless you stepped on him. He was found deceased. The family was very grateful that he was found, but sad because he was deceased. Everyone did an outstanding job. We just need more people to help search, we may have been able to find him a little sooner. The result probably would have been the same. Thanks to all of you that responded to the mission. This is why you are in SAR!!!
Not all searches are notable to the press or anyone else. They are all notable to us in Search and Rescue. You will note that this mission was not even in the paper or on the TV. For those of you that were thinking, “I have to go to school tomorrow or I have to work tomorrow”. You can still respond then leave in the morning to go to school or work. Some of the members did just that. It helps the search effort if you are willing to lose a little sleep in order to help someone survive the night. Many of us always respond to the mission and then had to return to work or school the next day. We need as many ESAR members as possible at the beginning of the mission so we have a better chance of finding the person alive that is why you are in ESAR!!!
